Minicab crashes into school

A MINICAB careered into a school gate minutes before pupils were due to arrive.

Staff at Franciscan Primary School in Tooting watched in horror as the car slammed through iron railings on the pavement and came to a halt after taking the main gates off their hinges.

The crash happened at 8.20am on Wednesday. Some of the school's 450 pupils had arrived for a breakfast club from 7.30am.

Most children get dropped off by their parents at around 8.45am.

Headteacher Clare McDonnell said: "We heard an extraordinary noise and raced outside in time to see the car crash through the main entrance gate of the school."

The minicab was used by Croft Cars Express,in Franciscan Road. Controller Mohamed Farook said: "The driver is fine. I'm not sure exactly what happened but the driver said he could not steer the car."

A police spokeswoman said the driver was not arrested.
