An 18-year-old woman wanted in the shooting of a former London taxi driver is behind bars in London.

Nadia Ayyad appeared in a London courtroom on an attempted murder charge yesterday, one day after being arrested by police in Windsor.

London police are looking for two more suspects in the May 18 shooting that left Salahaldin Ali, 48, with severe stomach injuries.

Ali has had four operations since the shooting and needs more, he said yesterday, lifting his shirt to show bandages covering his torso and a colostomy bag.

Ali said he feels "good" one suspect has been caught but he still fears for his safety.

Ali said he once had a relationship with Ayyad — he took her in and tried to help her out. When he saw documents showing she was a teenager, he was shocked and angry, he said.

Police said Ayyad lived in Toronto before moving to London, and since Ali's shooting has lived in Windsor.

The two hadn't seen each other for weeks before the shooting, Ali said.

The shooting happened at 5 a.m. on May 18. Ali said he was awakened by a knock at the door. Soon after, he was shot.

Meanwhile, his life has been turned upside down.

Ali's Ontario Works counsellor suspended his welfare, he said, after seeing reports calling him a taxi driver. "So now what?" he asked. "Next month, how will I survive?"

Ali said he was a taxi driver but hasn't worked more than two years, since being pinned under a car he was working on.

Before being shot, he was known to have an open-door policy at his apartment and was known by many in London's Sudanese, Jamaican and Canadian communities. A reggae fan, Ali said he used to frequent bars that played Caribbean music, but left the scene because of violence he blamed on Toronto bar-goers.
