New "taxi poles", which aim to make hailing a black cab easier, have been unveiled in London's West End.

They will show where people can wait for a taxi on the street and provide information about the tariff.

There are nine poles being set up - four in central London and five in south London.

The scheme, which could be extended if it is successful, was officially launched in Cavendish Square, central London, on Thursday.

Len Simkins, from the Public Carriage Office, said: "For the first time taxi ranks will be clearly marked and carry useful information about London's famous black taxis.

"Tourists, clubbers and people working late can now wait together in a safer, well-lit spot for a taxi."

The poles will state the taxi tariff and approximate prices from the pole site to key locations around London.

They will be recognisable by the taxi roundel at the top of the pole.
