The Tories have accused Transport for London of a "flagrant abuse of power" after claims that it set up an "anti-Boris unit" against London Mayoral hopeful Boris Johnson.

Shadow Commons leader Theresa May spoke of reports that London's transport commissioner Peter Hendy had asked his communications team to set up the unit and that TfL had told taxi drivers not to issue receipts inscribed with "back Boris".

Mr Johnson, Henley's MP, is challenging incumbent Ken Livingstone for the job of Mayor in May's election.

In Commons exchanges on coming parliamentary business, Mrs May said: "It was reported last week that the commissioner for transport for London has asked his communications team to set up an anti-Boris unit.

"Transport for London has also told taxi drivers that they can't issue receipts with 'back Boris' on them and it has threatened to withdraw funding from the Metropolitan Police if their road traffic officers continue to criticise the safety record of bendy buses.

"Is this not a flagrant abuse of power and can we have a debate on Transport for London?"

Commons Leader Harriet Harman replied that London issues would be the subject for a future topical debate in the House.
