The Royal Bank of Scotland Group (RBS) has partnered with MasterCard to launch a contactless debit and credit card payment service for taxis across UK. The pilot project targets 25 London-based taxis owned by Xeta. The technology for the project was the result of a partnership with UK card processing systems supplier Commidea.

An RBS report reveals that 42 percent of those living in London would pay by card for a taxi journey, if they had no cash on them. 78 percent of London taxi drivers claim that if they accepted cards, customer payment would become easier and faster. Customers wishing to pay with a contactless card hold their card up to a reader in the cab in order to make their payment.

For contactless payments below GBP 10, entering a PIN is not necessary.
